Featured Videos

Featured videos are videos which best represent your channel as a whole. Make sure to select up to 4 videos which best represent you as a content creator and also ideally the ones which get a good amount of views.

About Me Section

Write a short and compelling description about yourself. You have up to 200 characters so make sure to only include the things which are most important.

Why Your Media Kit is Important

Your media kit can be considered your curriculum vitae (CV) of a content creator. This is where brands browse through when deciding which influencers to work with so making sure that your media kit visualizes your work to its best capabilities is important to close more brand partnerships which in turn will help to increase your earnings.

How to Set Your Pricing

In order to set your pricing for sponsored videos click on “Set your suggested prices” in the lower right corner inside BrandConnect. Here you can select your pricing for:

  • Long-form video (Traditional YouTube videos)
  • Short video (YouTube shorts)

Avg. views X CPM ($15-30)

Formula to Calculate Your Pricing

The best way to determine what you should charge as a content creator is to back calculate what advertisers typically pay to reach their target audience.

Below is the formula you can use to calculate your pricing:

Pricing = ( Target CPM / 1000 ) X Average views per video

CPM stands for cost per mille and is a common marketing term used by advertisers to indicate how much they are paying to reach 1,000 people.

CPM Rates on YouTube

Before delving into category-specific averages, it's important to recognize the key factors that influence CPM rates.

Factors Which influence CPM rates on YouTube

  • Content Category/Niche: Certain topics attract higher-paying advertisers due to the value of the audience.
  • Geographic Location: Viewers from countries with stronger economies generally yield higher CPMs. For example, audiences in the United States, Canada, and Western Europe tend to generate higher ad revenue compared to viewers in other regions.
  • Audience Demographics: Advertisers may pay more to reach specific age groups, genders, or interest-based audiences.
  • Seasonality: Advertising budgets can increase during certain times of the year, such as holidays, leading to higher CPMs.
  • Engagement Levels: Videos with higher engagement rates (likes, comments, shares) may attract more lucrative ads.

Average CPM Rates by Category

Below is an approximate overview of average YouTube CPM rates by content category. Please note that these figures are estimated ranges and actual rates can vary based on the factors mentioned above.

CPM Table
Category CPM Explanation
Finance and Investing $12 to $25+ Financial content often commands the highest CPMs. Advertisers in banking, investment, insurance, and related services are willing to pay a premium to reach audiences interested in financial topics.
Business and Entrepreneurship $8 to $20 Channels focusing on business strategies, entrepreneurship, marketing, and professional development attract higher-paying advertisers targeting professionals and business owners.
Technology and Gadgets $4 to $12 Content related to technology reviews, unboxings, and tutorials appeals to advertisers in the tech industry, including software companies and gadget manufacturers.
Health and Fitness $5 to $12 Health, wellness, and fitness channels draw advertisers selling supplements, exercise equipment, and wellness programs, resulting in moderate to high CPMs.
Educational Content $4 to $10 Educational videos covering topics like science, math, and language learning attract advertisers interested in educational services and products.
Real Estate $6 to $15 Real estate content, including property investment advice and home buying tips, attracts higher CPMs due to advertisers in the housing market and related financial services.
Lifestyle and Fashion $3 to $8 Lifestyle channels covering fashion, beauty, and personal care tend to have moderate CPMs, with advertisers promoting cosmetics, apparel, and lifestyle brands.
Gaming $1 to $7 Gaming is a highly popular category with a broad audience. While view counts can be high, CPMs may be lower due to a younger audience demographic.
Entertainment and Comedy $2 to $6 Channels focusing on humor, sketches, and entertainment have moderate CPMs. Advertisers range from media companies to consumer products.
Travel and Tourism $4 to $9 Travel vlogs and destination reviews attract advertisers in the tourism industry, including airlines, hotels, and travel agencies.

What CPM Should You Use to Quote Brands

What is important to note is that the above CPMs are what brands pay to advertise through YouTube’s advertising network. These are advertisements which are shown before a video or during a video.

The impact of such a paid advertisement is often lower compared to an authentic recommendation from an influencer like you. That being said we typically advise to charge around 1.5X - 2.5X the average CPM brands pay for paid advertisements on YouTube.

To get a better understanding of this lets simply take a look at an example.

Example to Calculate What You Should Charge as an Influencer on YouTube

Lets take the YouTube lifestyle influencer below as an example.

From the overview above lifestyle and fashion had an average CPM of $3 - $8.

For this example let's assume the following:

  • You are charging 2.5X the average CPM (due to above avg. engagement rate)
  • Average CPM of this category: $8

Based on this your CPM rate will be $20.

The average views per video based on the last 20 videos of this channel amounts to: 477,485 views.

To calculate your rate for a sponsored video using the formula from the previous section the rate for this influencer should be around:

Pricing = ( Target CPM / 1000 ) X Average views per video

= ( $20 / 1,000 ) X 477,485 = $9,550.

Based on this example the input rate for a sponsored long form video would be around $9,550.

YouTube does not take a cut from this rate. It could be that they charge a % fee to the brands from this budget but you as the content creator will receive the fee which has been negotiated with the brand.

Drawbacks of YouTube BrandConnect

Below are some of the most important drawbacks of YouTube BrandConnect.

High Eligibility Threshold

To join YouTube BrandConnect, you need to meet specific eligibility criteria, including having at least 25,000 subscribers. Although they will most likely reduce this as they roll out the platform from their beta program it will most likely still be a barrier for small or emerging creators who are still building their audience. As a result, many creators may not have access to the platform's benefits until they significantly grow their channels.

Limited Control Over Partnerships

BrandConnect facilitates connections between creators and brands, but it may limit your control over certain aspects of the partnership. Brands often have specific requirements and creative guidelines that you must adhere to, which can restrict your creative freedom. Additionally, negotiating terms may be less flexible compared to direct collaborations.

Platform Dependence

Relying solely on YouTube BrandConnect for brand partnerships can make you dependent on the platform's policies and algorithms. Changes to YouTube's system, eligibility criteria, or fee structures can directly impact your ability to secure deals and earn revenue. This dependence can create uncertainty and limit diversification of your income streams.

Less Direct Communication with Brands

Communication with brands via BrandConnect often occurs through the platform's messaging system, which may not be as direct or personal as emailing or meeting with brand representatives independently. This indirect communication can sometimes lead to misunderstandings or less personalized relationships with brands.

How Much Can You Earn with YouTube BrandConnect?

Earnings from YouTube BrandConnect can vary greatly depending on your channel's reach, audience engagement, and the type of brand deals you secure. Influencers typically earn based on factors like video views, audience demographics, and the scope of the campaign. On average, creators can earn anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand dollars per sponsored video, with larger channels potentially earning upwards of $10,000 per campaign. The actual amount will depend on the specific brand collaboration and the creator's influence and engagement on YouTube.

Additionally, brands are increasingly investing in influencer partnerships, with influencer marketing projected to be a $21.1 billion industry in 2023. This growth has made platforms like YouTube BrandConnect more profitable for creators than ever before.

How to Get Brand Deals with YouTube BrandConnect

Disclosure and Compliance Guidelines

As you engage in brand partnerships through YouTube BrandConnect, understanding and adhering to disclosure and compliance regulations is essential. Transparency not only builds trust with your audience but also keeps you in line with legal requirements. This section covers the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulations, YouTube's platform-specific disclosure methods, and best practices for clear communication.

FTC Regulations: Understanding Legal Requirements

The FTC mandates that influencers clearly disclose any material connections with brands. This includes any form of compensation—monetary payment, free products, discounts, or other incentives. Disclosure ensures that your audience is aware of the sponsorship and can make informed decisions.

When to Disclose

  • Paid Promotions: Any content where you receive payment to promote a product or service.
  • Free Products or Services: When you receive items at no cost in exchange for a review or mention.
  • Affiliate Links: If you earn a commission from links provided in your content.
  • Personal Relationships: If you have a personal or familial connection with the brand.

How to Disclose Properly

  • Clarity and Language: Use simple and unambiguous terms like "Sponsored by," "In partnership with," or "Paid promotion."
  • Placement and Timing: Place the disclosure at the beginning of your video or immediately before the sponsored segment. It should appear where viewers can't miss it.
  • On-Screen and Verbal Disclosure: Include both a verbal statement and on-screen text to reinforce the message.
  • Avoid Ambiguous Terms: Phrases like "Thanks to..." or "Shout out to..." are not sufficient.

Consequences of Non-Compliance

  • Legal Action: You may face investigations or penalties from the FTC.
  • Fines: Financial penalties can be substantial for failing to disclose material connections.
  • Reputational Damage: Trust with your audience can be compromised, affecting your credibility and future opportunities.

YouTube Policies: Platform-Specific Disclosure Methods

YouTube requires creators to be transparent about paid promotions to maintain a trustworthy community. Complying with YouTube's policies is crucial for staying in good standing on the platform.

Use the "Paid Promotion" Feature

  • Paid Promotion Tag: When uploading your video, select the option that indicates your content includes a paid promotion.
  • Automatic Disclosure Message: YouTube will display a disclosure message at the beginning of your video for a few seconds.
  • Additional Disclosures: Despite using this feature, you should still include clear disclosures within your content as per FTC guidelines.

Follow Community Guidelines

  • Transparency with Viewers: Ensure that your sponsorship disclosures are prominent and understandable.
  • No Deceptive Practices: Avoid misleading your audience about the nature of your relationship with the brand.
  • Content Compliance: Your video must comply with YouTube's Community Guidelines and Ad Policies.

Ad Policies and Monetization

  • Advertiser-Friendly Content: Produce content that is suitable for all audiences to maximize monetization opportunities.
  • Restricted Content: Be aware of content that may be restricted or demonetized, such as sensitive topics or inappropriate language.
  • No Incentivized Clicks: Do not encourage viewers to click on ads or engage in artificial means to increase views or impressions.

Final thoughts on YouTube BrandConnect

In conclusion, YouTube BrandConnect is a valuable tool for influencers looking to monetize their content through authentic brand partnerships. With streamlined processes and opportunities for collaboration, it can enhance your channel's growth and revenue. However, challenges such as high eligibility thresholds, limited control over partnerships, and platform dependence should be considered.

By understanding both the benefits and drawbacks, you can make informed decisions on leveraging BrandConnect while balancing independent collaborations to diversify your income and maintain creative freedom.
